Just hours after India’s historic victory over South Africa to win the T20 World Cup in Barbados last Saturday, three players on the team declared they would be retiring from Twenty20 international cricket within the next twenty-four hours. The first person to make this declaration after winning Player of the Match was Virat Kohli. In addition, Indian captain Rohit Sharma declared his retirement at the news conference held after the game. After a few hours, Ravindra Jadeja eventually added her name to this list. Is Jasprit Bumrah coming up next, though?
Jasprit Bumrah
For the first time in seventeen years, India won the T20 World Cup thanks in large part to Bumrah. With an economy rate of just 8.26, he grabbed 15 wickets, which ranked him second in the event. His most impressive effort occurred during the match, when he prevented South Africa from winning with economical bowling in the last overs.
Following the game, Kohli, Rohit, and Jadeja declared their retirement from T20I cricket, but Bumrah affirmed that he would be sticking around.
Bumrah replied, “There is still a lot of time,” in response to an unexpected question on his retirement during the honors ceremony at Wankhede Stadium. I’ve only recently begun. Hopefully, a significant amount of time remains.”
Kohli commended Bumrah and gave an explanation of how he saved India during an earlier event in Mumbai, where Heinrich Klaasen had nearly single-handedly reduced the target to 25 runs in the final 25 balls. With just six runs conceded in two overs, Bumrah caused South Africa to crumble and ultimately lose by seven runs.
“Just like the rest of the spectators in the stadium, we too feared at one point that it might slip away again. However, the events of those last five overs were nothing short of extraordinary,” expressed the former Indian captain. You know, I want everyone to recognize the player who has kept us in this tournament by consistently bringing us back into the game. He bowled two of the final five overs, which was an incredible feat.Let’s give Jasprit Bumrah a big round of applause. It is a blessing that he plays for us.”
At the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, where India started their competition domestically, bowlers got a fair share of the rewards on a comfortable pitch, but Bumrah continued to be a differentiator.
After taking the wickets of Josh Little and Harry Tector in his opening three overs of the competition against Ireland, the right-armer restricted their opponents to just 96 runs. After winning Player of the Match for his heroics, the fast followed it up four days later with what may have been an even more important performance against Pakistan.

With just 119 on the board, Bumrah struck inside the Powerplay to dismiss Babar Azam, finding the outside edge of the opposition captain and into Suryakumar Yadav’s hands. In what turned out to be the pivotal moment of the match, he came back to defeat Mohammad Rizwan. He then tricked Iftikhar Ahmed to end with figures of 3/14 (4), giving up only one boundary.
